ROW, ROW, ROW Your Wednesday Check-In

It’s seven o’clock and I’m getting ready to face the day armed with a cup of coffee and the knowledge that I can finally write as long as I want. My daughter went back to her mother’s place yesterday. I miss her, but I’m also ready to get back to work.

And the whole sleeping until I chose to wake up thing didn’t suck, either.

Despite the interruptions of my adorable child, I was able to get some stuff done, so my two remaining goals are looking good.

Freelancing

I have nine articles written and I’m massaging them into second drafts. I picked up a book on journalism and journalistic writing which is helping me wrap my head around how articles of this type need to be handled. Things like AP style, writing a good lede, writing relatively short pieces under tight deadlines–it’s all covered and it’s all stuff I’m already making use of.

The articles I’m writing now are more marketing-oriented than I’m used to, but that’s what the site wants. The strange thing is that I loved writing them, despite not being enthusiastic about the subjects. I hear tell that’s good sign.

I’ve also been slowly collecting a list of sites, magazines and newspapers that might be interested in the sort of stuff I want to write. That’s just the beginning of a very long research project, because the whole querying, contracting, yadda, yadda thing is still rocket surgery to me.

This Site

I’m posting here, aren’t I?

Still keeping to three or more a week, but I still have some site changes to work out. I’m planning to devote part of my weekend to that, which should be enough time. And nothing about what I want to do–apart from posting–is time-critical.

The Rest of This Week

Tons of writing, revising, studying and research. There’s a bunch to do and now I have the time to do it.

Hi Jeff! It’s a wonderful thing to enjoy writing even if you don’t love the subjects. Glad to hear freelancing is working for you!

If I may ask, what book did you get that is helping you so much?

Good luck on your goals the rest of the week!
