The Little Engine That Almost Is (Wednesday Check-In)

I’m slowly picking up the pieces of my shattered productivity and rebuilding the machine between my ears. It’s a painful process, but things are beginning to come together. Progress on my goals has still been less than stellar, but I’ll take whatever credit I can get.

In completely unrelated news, the coffee I brewed this morning tastes like it was filtered through an old gym sock, so I’m making another pot. If this check-in seems a little off, that’s why.

This Site

Continuing to post regularly, easily hitting my goal of no less than three a week. Because I’ve been rocking this goal with ease since the beginning of the round, I’m thinking of adding a promotion piece to this goal. “I will pimp my site once a day on the social networks,” or something like that.

What kind of “sub-goal” would you set if you wanted more people coming over to see your stuff?

Freelancing

I took care of some revisions and have a couple articles pretty much ready to go over at that Unnamed Site, but mainly I’m back in reading and research mode. I’m learning more about non-fiction narratives, studying the writing of others, reading more about journalism, and continuing to search for places which might be interested in what I have to offer.

On that last front, I might be picking up a subscription to the Writer’s Market this month. Still undecided, but I’m hearing more and more that it would be useful for what I’m trying to do.

Like I wrote above, it’s progress.

Yep, any steps forward take you further along the path in the right direction. As to blogging, I think commenting on other people’s blogs is a way to get your name out there, show interest and support of others, and build community. I certainly also tweet my blog posts and add them to my Facebook status. Hope you have a very productive week! Best wishes with ROW80.

Everything that Julie said! I would say commenting on other blogs is a great way to get people to come by and see what you’ve posted. You took the time to check in on them, so they want to do the same, ya know? Good progress with your goals. It’s hard to get back on track, but you can do it! Have a great rest of the week!

Everything your other readers said, plus I suggest using Google Reader.

Love, love, love this method of keeping an eye on all the blogs I read. Maybe you already use Reader, but if not, and for those who’ve never tried it, keep in mind you can categorize blogs, filing similar blogs under a heading. My headings include: Inspirational, Book Blogs, Writing Blogs, and General Information. Every blog heading has the number of unread posts beside it, so you know when you’re falling behind.

Also, I like using Hootsuite tabs to keep track of various hashtags, like #edchat, #amwriting, #ROW80.

Have a great ROW80 week and happy hunting.

I’ve been using Google Reader exclusively for honest-to-God news feeds (The Stranger, Slate, GAO announcements, etc.) and a desktop RSS client for blogs. I’m mostly happy with this approach, but I have to admit one or the other usually goes unread for days.
Maybe it’s time to just throw everything at Google Reader and be done with it.
How is Hootsuite, anyway? I keep thinking about giving it a shot, but I have the Fear.
